BrokeN Glass Murals

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

This set of Re-Occupationalist Murals are temporary murals made with the reorganized broken glass from the alcohol epidemic in Gallup, New Mexico. The alcohol epidemic primarily impacts Native Americans, specifically the Navajo.

The murals were made in and spread across a 32-acre field in the center of Gallup that sits directly on the red line that divides the town in half (and into two high school districts). The field sits directly across from a white mansion on a hill that can be seen from anywhere in town. Two of the murals, sit on top of an opposing hill in the field that elevates the viewer to the same level as the mansion owner, and offers a similar view of the town.

The other murals present themselves as gifts in less “public” areas of the field that could only be seen by unsheltered relatives, walkers (those that continuously walk to avoid being arrested), and members of the community who really explore the field.

The murals take on non-representational shapes such as spirals and zig-zags. Because the murals aren’t held down by anything, there stands the possibility for nature to reclaim them, covering them in sand or washing them away.
